Clarified Search for Individuals with the New Tool "Uniqueness of the Name"

Melnyk, Shevchenko, Kovalenko, Bondarenko, Boiko… Probably, everyone has acquaintances with such surnames. No wonder, because these are the five most common surnames in Ukraine!

While searching for an individual by a full name, it is important to make sure that the search results relate to a certain individual. To do this, the YouControl team developed an addition to the system of search for individuals – the indicator "Uniqueness of the name".

When you need to find out information about a certain person, to come across namesakes and homonyms means to get confused in the search results.

The YouControl system provides different variations of the search for individuals. The search can be carried out by a full name, date of birth, identification code. As in most registers the search is possible only by a full name, this parameter is key to the successful search for a person.

What Does the "Uniqueness of the Name" Demonstrate?

The indicator shows whether the search results relate to a particular person. That is, looking for anyone, you will see how unique his/her full name is and understand the probability that you are checking a namesake.

For example, you want to get information about Petrenko Pavlo Oleksandrovych. Given the fairly high prevalence of this surname in Ukraine and the rather traditional first and patronymic names, this full name is not unique, about what the new parameter will signal in advance.

How Does the Indicator Work?

The indicator shows the level of originality of a full name in percentage terms.

Data on the coincidence of full names both in Ukraine in general and in certain regions are provided.

The maximum level for the uniqueness of a full name is 99%. This suggests that in a particular region or country in general there is probably only one person with such a full name.

If the uniqueness is 50% in the selected geographical unit (in the country in general or in a particular region), there are probably two people with such a full name.

According to this approximate logic of calculations:

• 33% – three people with the identical full name;

25% – four;

20% – five people;

10% – ten individuals;

1% – one hundred people, etc.

What to Pay Attention To?

An important point is to focus on the geographical factor. If you want to check a person from a specific region of Ukraine, it will significantly improve your chances of finding information about the person you need.

For example, you need to check the conditional Melnyk O.O. from Odesa region. In general, the level of uniqueness of this full name in Ukraine will be low. If you narrow the search to a specific region, the uniqueness will be higher. After all, it may happen that in Odesa region the uniqueness is 99%, so all the information can relate to only one person. Or for the indicator of 50% – to one of two people. This significantly narrows the circle of checking.
